Empowering the Next Generation: African Americans in STEM and Government Speaker Series Event

May 10, 2024 - DIU Board Members (Emily and Nyla) host the African Americans in STEM and Government Speaker Series Event at Francisco Middle School's Day W/O Walls Event. The speaker event opened up with a lovely video from California Secretary Weber. We had the wonderful opportunity to teach the middle school students the harms of stereotypes, the importance of identity and diversity. Our speakers, Richmond Councilmember Melvin Willis, Dr. Jason Sello, Attorney Luke P. Apfeld, Attorney Ayana Curry, and Attorney John Burris, provided their stories and expertise, which inspired the students. Our 30 minute activity, which was a mural project, in which the students were able to get hands-on and draw themselves in their dream career. They also were able to write positive words around their portrait. The speakers worked with the students in groups and also got involved in this activity. We collected everyone's portraits and created a diversity mural. The DIU Board gifted the mural to Francisco Middle School. Below is a photo with Nyla and Emily with Francisco Middle School's principal, Principal Sang-Yeon Lee. Overall, we are grateful for this opportunity to host our event at Francisco Middle School. Thank you to the Francisco Middle School Administration and the DIU Team for making this event happen! More information on this recap here.
